Redefine Your Ritual

Website Images (12).png

The most important aspect of your coffee ritual is your intention. Take every step of your ritual presently and purposefully. If you don't yet have a favourite coffee cup, treat yourself to a new one, and be as picky as you need to be to find a cup that suits you perfectly.

Before starting your ritual, get everything ready: put the kettle on, weigh out and grind your coffee and get all of your brewing materials prepared and within reach.

Step 1

Set your intention for the ritual.

This is your opportunity to give an extra bit of meaning to your morning brew. Once your intention is set, maintain your focus on being present and purposeful throughout.

Step 2

Prepare your brewing materials.

If you haven't yet, weigh and grind your coffee; wet your filter if you need to; measure your milk and warm your cup through. This is the time to get any and every little aspect lined up so you can continue without pause or distraction.

Step 3

Start your brewing process.

Before you begin, take a deep breath in through your nose and gently out through your mouth. Coffee brewing can be as meditative as you want to make it, use your breathing to set your pace and keep you present. Whichever brewing method you prefer to do, engage fully in each step.

Step 4

Savour the sights, sounds and smells.

Embrace the sensory experience of coffee brewing. For us, the pour-over method is the most engaging. Try to listen out for the gentle crackling as the water connects with the coffee grounds, and the relaxing trickle that comes with pouring the coffee into your cup.

Step 5

Take your first sip with mindful purpose.

As you draw your cup near to your lips, take a moment to breathe in the rich, warming aroma. Notice the warm sensation of the cup against your lip, and take your first sip slowly and purposefully. Try to give each sensation its own moment, starting with the heat of the coffee as it touches your tongue. Then you may notice the taste, what sort of a profile can you pick out? As you swallow your first sip, see if you can trace the warmth flowing down into your stomach.
